Artist's Comments

The corset was an assignment for my Costume Technology II class at the Theatre School at DePaul University.

As to the corset, I drafted the pattern from the example of the effigy corset in Norah Waugh's book Corsets and Crinoline's, and then altered it to fit myself, and had two fittings. It consists of two layers of cotton coutil and one layer of cotton sateen. It is fully boned with 1/4" steel bones. I embroidered a period blackwork pomegranate on the side, at my teacher's request that I do a little extra. The edges are bound with corded piping.

October 2007

The partlet is hanky weight linen with a starched box pleated ruffle. The collar is evenweave linen and is hand blackworked by yours truly.

Summer 2007

Note on both: when I have a chance, I will get detail pictures on the embroidery so you can actually see what I did, since I am aware that these images are a little too far away for that. Apologies.

Beautiful! I wish we had gotten to do more corsetry work, but alas, we didn't have the time for it! This is a grand job, though, I love the color, too ;P

Is it uncomfortable without tabs, though? I can't remember if Elizabethan corsets usually had them ^_^;

I would definitely say that they are more comfortable with tabs, but the only way it makes a difference is if the boning continues down into the tabs; unboned tabs or non-continuous boning does not make it more comfortable. During the period, they could be done either way. I didn't really have a choice about the construction of this one because it was for a class, otherwise there would have been several things I did differently.

Ah, see, I always thought any sort of tab helped to put the weight off of your waist, as the corset sits above it, and keeps all the layers of petticoats from both shifting and biting into you. I have seen them done both ways, though :D

Isn't it fun when you get assignments for classes that you don't get much of a say in? ;P It turned out really pretty, though!

Non-boned tabs don't prevent the corset from digging into your waist, which of course is a pain, and the petticoats really shouldn't shift or bite if they're fitted properly, tabs or no tabs.

Thank you!
